WEMDSL
Walbro
Engine
Management
Declarable
Substance
List
The
objective of
the Walbro
Engine
Management
Declarable
Substance
List (WEMDSL)
is to take a
step down
the
corporate
social
responsibility
path so that
there is an
understanding
of the
substances
being used
in products
supplied to
our global
customers.
In recent
year’s
regional
legislative
and customer
driven
directives
have
required
compliance
with RoHS (Restriction
of
Hazardous
Substances),
REACH (Registration,
Evaluation,
Authorization
&
Restriction
of Chemicals),
POPs (Persistent
Organic
Pollutants),
WEEE (Waste
Electrical
& Electronic
Equipment),
SOR (Statutory
Orders
& Regulations),
Montreal
Protocol,
P65,
(California
Proposition
65) and
others.
Many of
these lists
contain the
same
substances
so an
attempt to
condense
them into
one master
list for all
customers in
all regions
is the
WEMDSL. To
be compliant
with WEMDSL
is to be
compliant in
the larger
global
scheme of
declarable
substances.
To assure
compliance
and avoid
the
possibility
of fines and
market
recalls,
it’s
necessary
that all
suppliers be
aware of
these
substances &
obtains
material
data on each
component &
subassembly
that we
purchase.
This data is
then entered
into a
secure
database
that is only
to be used
for
regulatory
compliance,
so that we
are able to
provide a
substance
list to any
customer
that
requests it.
Many of the
substances
are
prohibited
all
together,
scheduled
for phase
out by a
specific
date or
controlled
at a
threshold
values. We
are asking
for full
material
disclosures
because, for
example, the
REACH SVHC
list is
updated
twice each
year &
continually
updated for
scientific
progress.
That means
new
substances
are
continually
being added
and existing
substances
that have
been used
under an
exemption
may have
that
exemption
removed when
alternatives
are found.
Full
disclosure
will
preclude the
need to
continually
go back to
our valued
business
partners for
updates.
Although
this is a
big task, it
is very
necessary to
support the
legal
directives
mentioned
above. No
data = no
market.
